We’re quite familiar with him here in Virginia. He cultivates the image of tobacco–chewing hick, the same way George II does. His handpicked candidate for Governor in 2005-the sad Jerry Kilgore–lost pretty big to the Democrat. Part of the reason is because they sicced the vicious Swift Boat Veterans for truth team on his opponent. He’s runing hard for President. He’s considered a shoo-in for reelection this year (to the point where he spends most of his time out of state).
But I’m hoping ex Reaganite Jim Webb beats him soundly. First Webb has to win the democratic primary, which will not be easy.

I have read that Webb’s entry into the campaign has required Allen to actually campaign for reelection. It seems that Webb’s credentials could make him a formidable opponent for Allen, who will have to deal with his extreme fidelity to the Bush regime whose approval rating in VA is in the 30s. Hopefully the democratic voters will appreciate his independence rather than holding his support of various republicans against him.
Allen, according to the TNR article has some racism related skeletons lurking in his closet that will be trotted out by his opponents in a presidential campaign.
The fact that he uses a “spit cup” is proof positive that the guy is a phony. Real tobacco chewers swallow the effluent.
